A quick intro to OpenOcean

OpenOcean is a leading early-stage venture capital fund that invests in outstanding entrepreneurs launching movements to change the world. We invest in software businesses at Series A and support them throughout their entire journey. From companies like MySQL, MariaDB, Orchestream and Automic we have accumulated rich experience in business software both with super-scalable go-to-market models like open source, freemium downloads and SaaS, and commercialisation with the largest enterprises and service providers in the world. In our home geography of Europe, we see great opportunity in sectors including media, FinTech, HealthTech, as well as in new software solutions for big data, e-commerce enablement, and developers.

You’ll be joining a small but dynamic team in London, composed of Richard, Anastasiya & Max, and will work on various projects with each team member.

Three Core Parts to the Role:

Assisting the Investment Team throughout the Investment Process

  • Source and evaluate investment opportunities alongside the investment team
  • Take over responsibility for initial contact with founders to collect core information about their businesses
  • Immerse yourself in the London tech community through meet-ups, conferences, accelerators and universities to find the most interesting projects being built
  • Show us how we could improve our investment process

Researching a Deep Tech Sector or other Theme of Interest

  • Dive into a deep tech sector (e.g. Machine Learning, Blockchain, DevOps) or other theme of interest (e.g. FinTech, Digital Health, Data Privacy) to help build & strengthen our investment thesis
  • Create a comprehensive market map and evaluate opportunities for OpenOcean to invest in this sector
  • Curate & engage the key academics, entrepreneurs and companies in this space
  • Attend the most interesting events & meet-ups

Organising Events and Distributing Thought Leadership Content

  • Help organise & run our monthly London dinners with investors, entrepreneurs and industry leaders
  • Assist the planing of large scale events at conferences with top European investors and founders
  • Work with our PR agency to grow our presence on Twitter, Medium and other publications

Who we’re looking for:

It IS personal! There has to be a personality fit as you will be working with every team member on a daily basis. You will meet the whole team and we will take you out for a beer before making an offer.

The three key requirements:

  • Genuinely passionate about technology and startups
  • Bring an edge to the team in a domain that we’re collectively missing so far
  • Something that makes you … different.

Other non-required aspects we look for:

  • Technical background (Coders, Hackers, Engineers)
  • Outstanding student or recent graduate with stellar academic record
  • ‘Starter Finisher’ mentality with rhino-strength resilience
  • Fluent in another language (we will test you, as we do indeed speak 11 languages including Australian!)
  • Work experience in a high-performance environment

Apply here and inspire us with a story about what makes you original. We’ll also ask you to send us an overview of your core interests you’d like to research and two startups we should consider including your reasoning.
